French Paper Sample Book

Paper sample booket made for French Paper'd Dur-o-tone line of paper.

The concept for this book was to focus on some of the bizarre news headlines about people from Florida. Some people believe it’s the heat, some believe it’s the mix of people, but whatever your theory is, Florida seems to always have something strange going on.  The focus specifically was the number of strange phone calls coming in to the 911 line. There are many stories of this kind, but this book focused on six. There will be one per spread. The six news reports were from:
•a couple who claimed to be stuck in a closet, which cops found to be unlocked
•a man who called 911 80 times requesting kool-aid, burgers, and drugs
•a man who was angry because he was denied access to a strip club with his cat
•a man outraged by the number of flies in his kitchen after cooking bacon
•a lady angered by Mcdonalds when she  found her chicken nuggets missing
•a lady who called 911 claiming to be lost in the woods and did not know where to urinate

To make the book more cohesive, all the people in the stories were patients of the same fictional doctor. The psychologist was  named Dr. Durotone, his name came from the Dur-o-tone paper line which was used through out this book. His motto was “Never be afraid to call”, which hints that some of incidents that happened could have been provoked by Dr. Durotone. This also was used to encourage the audience to call French Paper Company. Each spread will feature one story.  For each spread there was type and illustrations. Each one also included a separate tab with patients name and photo of the person. Other objects used on the page were the news headline, phone call dialogue, body copy from their article, and inserts with “doctor notes”. Each page also included a tab with a symbol relating to the story. This allowed viewer to easily flip to each story and also mimicked the organization of a real file folder. The style of this book was designed to be similar to a criminal profile folder mixed with vintage sign and newspaper. The book had a folder in the middle spread with inkblot test images. The inkblot test images were printed in different inks and varnishes to show how the paper handles each one. The whole book is designed to look like a patient file folder. The cover was made simple. It had a illustration of Dr.Durotone and it looked similar to a real patient file folder. The last page showed French paper’s logo and it said “Never be afraid to call.” On the back it had, distributed by French Paper and their contact information.
